Keeping active mentally and physically

Retirement is a time to enjoy all life has to offer and take the pace a little slower. It’s also the perfect time to explore new hobbies, interests and activities. We also know how important it is to remain physically fit and active. Which is why we offer a range of activities to keep both minds and bodies busy.

Entertainment and games

We offer all sorts of games and fun evenings to keep you entertained:

  • 100 Club – meets quarterly for a Bring and Share supper, fun activities and lucky draws – up to R1 000 can be won
  • Bingo – regular Bingo evenings are held at Glen’s Den where all are welcome to participate and socialise
  • Bridge – all social and fun, there is plenty of opportunity to get involved
  • Music concerts – with toe tapping music to get everyone dancing
  • Quiz nights – meet three times a year to test your wits, with a light meal and lots of fun and laughter
Port Alfred offers a very active Bridge Club that meets twice a week and also offers lessons. There is also an active and vibrant Coffee Club that welcomes new members.

Groups and talks

Whatever your interests, you’ll most likely find a club that meets regularly in the Village:

  • Lower Albany Historical Society (LAHS) – organises expert talks and arranges tours of places of historical interest
  • Probus Club – a men’s only social club for professionals over 50 that meets monthly
  • Sparkles Choir – a fun initiative by a very accomplished choir mistress to get everybody singing
  • University of the Third Age (U3A) – provides interesting intellectually stimulating talks and get-togethers
  • Women’s Forum – a monthly social gathering with guest speakers where ideas and skills are shared

For those interested in taking part in community service, Rotary International, Round Table (for under 40s) and Lions Clubs International all have very active branches in Port Alfred.

Creative clubs

Discover your muse, green thumbs and hidden talents and get creative, with these clubs that meet regularly:

  • Card renovations – meets twice a month to renovate cards for all occasions that are sold at very reasonable prices
  • Floral Art Club – members get to make great floral creations after watching demonstrations by well-known floral artists
  • Garden Club – an active club that has numerous events throughout the year
  • Kowie Camera Club
  • Painting Circle – keen artists from in and outside Settlers Park meet weekly to receive tutoring from skilled resident artists, have tea and exhibit their artwork monthly

Physical activities and sport

To help keep you physically active and in shape, we offer a variety of activities for everyone. The Village grounds provide a safe and secure environment in which to go for a gentle stroll or a more strenuous run. A Park Walk is held once a month with graded walks for different abilities.

If you’re looking for more formal or social classes, you can easily join in with the following on offer at the Don Powis Hall:

  • Aerobics
  • Scottish country dance
  • Short mat bowls
  • Stretch and tone
  • Table tennis
  • Tai Chi

 

 

There is also a heated pool that you can use at your own leisure to train lengths. Aqua-aerobics classes are also offered twice a week.

The town of Port Alfred and surrounds also offer numerous sporting activities, such as:

  • The Royal Port Alfred Golf Club
  • Fish River Golf Club
  • Kowie Bowls Club
  • Port Alfred Bowls and Croquet Club
  • Port Alfred Tennis Club
  • Many angling and water sports opportunities on the Kowie River and the nearby beaches
  • Weekly Park Run
