Spring into Action: Activities to Welcome the New Season

Aug 29, 2025

Winter has had its run – blankets, soup, and dark mornings all included – but now it’s time to fling open the windows, shake off the cobwebs, and spring into action. At Settlers Park Retirement Village, the change of season isn’t just about flowers blooming; it’s about finding new energy, new routines, and of course, new excuses to gather, laugh, and maybe sneak in an extra slice of milk tart.

Spring is a wonderful reminder that life doesn’t slow down – it simply shifts gears. Our walking groups are lacing up for longer, sunnier strolls, while the gardeners are back in action, turning soil and showing off their green fingers (and sometimes muddy knees). Residents with dogs know it best: those furry friends practically drag their humans out the door the minute the sun peeks through. Even the cats, who pretend they’re above such seasonal nonsense, seem to find extra sunny spots to nap in.

Grandchildren are regular visitors this time of year too – and nothing keeps you young like being roped into a game of monopoly or supervising a “tea party” where the tea is really juice and the biscuits mysteriously disappear. For those who’d rather watch than run, the braai area is the perfect place to gather, relax and chat.

Settlers Park Retirement Village may be our home base, but spring is the season to explore. Port Alfred comes alive this time of year, whether it’s a morning meander at the Park Run, a stroll on the beach, or a coffee date at one of our town’s restaurants. For the more adventurous, there’s always golf, bowls, or even a cheeky day trip to the surrounding game reserves. And yes, the fishermen are already boasting about their catches – some of which may or may not be entirely true.

Spring is about shaking off the old and welcoming the new. Whether that’s joining an exercise class, trying out line dancing, or simply enjoying the company of fellow residents over tea and eats, the spirit of renewal is everywhere. And if the grandchildren bring home-grown flowers, even better – although we won’t ask whether they were picked or plucked.

So, let’s embrace it: more sunshine, more laughter, and more reasons to get up and get moving. At Settlers Park Retirement Village, spring isn’t just a season – it’s an invitation. And we’re all grateful for the opportunity to live life to the max.
